マーダー・バラッド（殺人のバラッド）と呼ばれるジャンルの中の1つ。
1656年にブロードサイド（かわら版）に”The Miller and the King’s Daughter.” として掲載されたのが最初です。
沢山のバージョンがあり、新しいバージョンでは、クルエル・シスター（残酷な姉）というタイトルでも有名。
歌の中に繰り返し出てくる「ミルダム（milldam）」という単語ですが、これは粉を挽くための水車用の小さなダム（堰）のことを指します。
また、水に流される美女、というのも中世からよくあるモチーフで、アーサー王物語に登場するアストラットのエレインやシャロットの女（小舟に乗せられているパターン。赤毛のアンが真似をしている）や、ハムレットに登場するオフィーリアなどにも見られます。
水は異界への入り口であり、この後に起こる超自然的な現象を示唆しているようにも見えます。
